The Empire strikes back against Favre (with rabies)
Five sport-type things you may want to know
I’d give you a long intro here, but that isn’t my style. Regardless, enjoy (with the chef’s compliments) the triumphant return for five sport-type things!
Woohoo!
1. The Evil Empire is almost back – After a blissful nine-year vacation from having to deal with the New York Yankees winning a world championship, the Bronx Bombers are a win away from taking the 2009 World Series … and consequently ruining the evening for every other baseball fan in America.
I say “evening” and not year, or month, or even week, because let’s face it, this is what Major League Baseball has reduced itself to … a mild curiosity that can get your blood going for a few minutes before fading back into the realm of Neo-pets, 8-tracks, Rick Springfield, and other obscurities.

Bye week!

After eight consecutive weeks of college football (and nine games attended in person), Cait and I are taking a much needed break this weekend. Was this part of the original plan? No. Is it a necessity in order to prevent my flinging poo at people? Absolutely.
But I haven’t forgotten about you, fellow Squee-ers! Here are my picks for the weekend and a hilarious video of Nebraska’s comedy of errors against Iowa State. Glorious.

The worst the sport has to offer
There was plenty to dislike in college football this weekend (with only some of it coming on the field of play). From more official madness to epic defensive collapses, from the winless dregs of college football to the under-achieving bluebloods, I’ve about had my fill of this crap.
But who am I kidding? I’ll always keep coming back for more … to make fun of.
Here’s the weekly Bottom 25 (at least in this humble author’s opinion).

Mississippi State-Florida: Teh Recap

Well, this was an interesting week. And while I could probably go on and on about the game (a fun, albeit sloppy affair with the Gators ultimately prevailing), the atmosphere (50,000 cowbells ringing in unison must be heard to be believed) or the hospitality (great fans who welcomed us into their tailgating tents and made our game-watching experience that much better with their passion and wonderful humor), this whole journey got started with the intent being an exploration of the humanity of the game … and that should (and does) include my relationship with my wife.
You see, I wouldn’t have gotten this far without her, I wouldn’t have even started it without her, and I sure as hell can’t finish it without her. She is, quite literally, the person that keeps this whole thing going, and I thank her for it.

NFL Guy and I (and a couple of cowbells) are about to hit the road for Starkville, Mississippi for tonight’s Mississippi State-Florida game, but as you enjoy your morning java and prepare to openly gawk at the shenanigans of Lee Corso, check out our pregame podcast for today’s college football stories:
- Florida hasn’t won in Starkville since 1985. 1985, people.
- Warm thoughts and fuzzies for the UConn family and for the family of Jasper Howard
- Quarterback on the rise: Christian Ponder (who may just be Florida State’s next Rhodes Scholar)
- Quarterback on the fall: Terrelle Pryor, who is obviously regressing this season for the Buckeyes
- Upset alert: Washington over Oregon
- BCS standings? Yawn.

But for now, here’s a little humor to start off your gameday:

Eyeblack Odyssey: More Cowbell … For Realz
Mississippi State vs. Florida

A week after reveling in the cowbell at McNeese State homecoming, we’re continuing the rusted noisemaker theme this week, travelling to Starkville for the Mississippi State-Florida game (though given the stakes of this particular contest, don’t expect the cowbell to be the major attraction).
As you know by now, Cait and I are going to a different college game every weekend. And you guys get to tag along. Every Friday I’ll preview the game we’re going to, we’ll be podcasting Saturday and tweeting the experience, then recapping the whole ball of wax with video/photos/what have you on Monday. As an added bonus, I pick winners for all the biggest games of the week (including this one).
Now that that’s out of the way, on to the football!

The worst the sport has to offer
After a great weekend at the McNeese State homecoming (I’d include the trip in some fashion here, but there was nothing about it that came remotely close to being Bottom 25-worthy), I’m in a relatively good mood this week.
It’s all relative, though, as certain teams around the country (I’m looking at you, Ohio State and Illinois) definitely earned my ire over the weekend.
It’s what I do.
Here’s the weekly Bottom 25 (at least in this humble author’s opinion).

McNeese State-Northwestern State: Teh Recap
In one Saturday, I took a ride in a dune buggy, experienced some Po-Boy magic, rang too many cowbells to count, was interviewed on the local news, ate something called demon stew (still not sure what was actually in it), met and drank beer with tons of college football nuts, took a picture with the head coach, and was even made an honorary homecoming king.
Yes, it was an eventful day.
The day really started with the Po-Boy, which is probably as good a place to start as any.

McNeese State vs. Northwestern State

I can almost taste the Boudin and Po-Boys.
That might be because I live in New Orleans. Or, it could be because we’ve got some real Louisiana flavor this week in a matchup of state rivals McNeese State and Northwestern State. Some of you might be wondering, “Who and who?” That’s okay, because not everyone follows the Championship Subdivision the way they could (or perhaps should?). But we’re looking to experience all sides of the college football spectrum on the Eyeblack Odyssey, and if you care to follow along, we’ll do our best to educate you.

The worst the sport has to offer

After watching my team take a 66-14 drubbing over the weekend, I’m not in a very giving mood. And that means I’m in the perfect state of mind for another edition of the Bottom 25!
Beware, dregs of college football. Beware.

Texas A&M-Oklahoma State: Teh Recap

I’ve heard, on more than one occasion, that I need to go to some Premiere League soccer matches, so that I can experience the crazy atmosphere.
I don’t doubt it. And that’s something I’d very much like to do some day. But you can’t sell college football short for the sheer fanatic nature of the folks involved … and that’s something I think our friends across the ocean don’t often get.
They should.

Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma State

NFL Guy gets the trusty wife back this week. Moreover, he gets a bigger matchup to sink his teeth into. Mostover, he’s changing the format a bit this week – picking all the big games for you nutty college fans out there. Yes, life is good.
Of course, the basic drill is the same. We’re going to a different college game every weekend. And you guys get to tag along. In a week that seemingly saw half the teams in the nation take a break (an exaggeration, but an appropriate one), I still saw plenty in the world of college football to dislike.
Hey, at least I’m consistent.

ULM-FIU: Teh Recap

I went to a BBQ and a football game broke out.
Not exactly, but it definitely felt that way at times Saturday as I journeyed to a wonderful little tailgating locale in Monroe, La. for the Louisiana-Monroe vs. Florida International game.

Louisiana-Monroe vs. Florida International

Another week, another game … and as you’d expect, things are a little different.
Going from the ACC to the Sun Belt is a fairly drastic change. We’re also into October, when the games get more meaningful. Moreover, Guy with Eyeblack will be missing Girl with Eyeblack this weekend (she’s got some work-type thingies going on), so the dynamics have definitely shifted some.
But the basics are the same. I’m going to a different college game every weekend. And you guys get to tag along. Every Friday I’ll preview the game I’m going to, I’ll be podcasting Saturday and tweeting the experience, then recapping the whole ball of wax with video/photos/what have you on Monday.

There was plenty to digest in Week 4 of the college football season, and there was also plenty that left us with indigestion. But I’m not complaining. After all, there wouldn’t be a Bottom 25 without the Taco Bells of the college football world.
Here’s the weekly Bottom 25 (at least in this humble author’s opinion).

GT-UNC: Teh Recap

Cait and I were in Atlanta this weekend for the Georgia Tech-North Carolina game, and let me tell you, I think we are still wet from the rain. The clothes I was wearing still are, anyway (absurd but true), and we’ve made it back home in our jalopy, which might be a miracle in and of itself.
Woot.
Check out some photos and vids and whatnot on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter (@nolanolegal or #eyeblack ), but read on for some more thoughts and impressions from our weekend.
