The College Football Bottom 25
The worst the sport has to offer

Welcome back to another week of the Bottom 25. We’ve got some real contenders for the top spot this week, thanks primarily to some colossal on-field failures over the weekend, so the countdown should be as entertaining as ever (unless you think this whole thing is poo, in which case, go read about ballet or something – not that ballet isn’t great in its own right, but yeah, it’s sort of the opposite of football … I think).
Anyway, here’s the weekly Bottom 25 (at least in this humble author’s opinion).
25. Florida’s offensive line – Four sacks surrendered again this week. If there’s any chink in this Florida team, it’s the passing game (and more specifically, the pass protection).
24. Rice – After being completely inept in their first eight games, the Owls found a new way to lose against SMU Saturday, suffering three blocked kicks in a 31-28 loss.
23. New Mexico – The Lobos hung with Utah for about a quarter before getting pasted over the final three periods. The way this season has gone, that’s got to be looked at as an improvement.
22. Eastern Michigan – A 50-6 beatdown on national television is not a good way to change one’s image. The only way the Eagles do that is by winning.
21. Texas playing the likes of Central Florida in November – When Texas is in the middle of a national championship push with the season winding down, the Longhorns take on the mighty Golden Knights in a 35-3 snooze-fest. These kinds of intersectional games should be outlawed in November.
20. Cal – Losing Jahvid Best to a second concussion in as many weeks was a scary thing (thankfully, Best should recover). Losing to the Beavers at home was more of a typical thing.
19. Syracuse – Fellow Big East cellar dweller Louisville is at least putting the occasional scare into folks. The Orange haven’t played a conference opponent within 14 points.
18. Boise State’s sense of urgency – The Broncos, on the basis of their putrid schedule, need to be blowing people out to assure themselves a BCS berth. Instead, they’re taking care of business calmly and methodically … and wrongly. They’re in real danger of getting the shaft, and it will take more than a fancy PR campaign to save them.
17. Washington State – You have to go back to Sept. 19 to find a game Washington State even had a chance at winning. It’s pretty obvious by now this is the worst “Big Six” conference team, and by a pretty wide margin at that.
16. Maryland – Unlike Washington State, Maryland has been competitive in conference play. Unfortunately, the Terps still haven’t won a whole lot (and then there’s that nasty Middle Tennessee loss, too).

Could the Superfrog tame the Longhorns? Sadly, we may never know.
15. TCU still looking for a test in mid-November – Games with Clemson and Air Force produced tight margins, but the Horned Frogs still haven’t been tested by a truly great team (no, BYU doesn’t count). Utah probably isn’t that team, either. I guess we’ll have to wait for bowl season.
14. Oklahoma’s offense – Amongst all the miscues in the Sooners’ inexplicable 10-3 loss to Nebraska, the five interceptions by Landry Jones were probably the ugliest.
13. Cincinnati’s defense – Completely rebuilt in the offseason, Cincinnati’s defense had performed well all year, never surrendering more than 20 points … and then the UConn game happened. 45 points? I’ve seen better defense out of Florida State! (Hey-o!)
12. LSU in big games – They’re not going to win. Stop convincing yourself that they will, because they won’t.
11. Oregon – I warned the Ducks to be on their toes against Stanford, but did they listen? No. And now they have a humbling loss (in which they surrendered 51 points) to contend with. The rest of the schedule isn’t very forgiving, and the reinstatement of LaGarrette Blount, which was actually in the works for several weeks, now looks a tad desperate. They’ve got some real work to do to make this season a success.
10. Michigan – The product on the field isn’t the only problem (though it’s certainly the biggest one following a home loss to Purdue). Athletic director Bill Martin also apparently needs anger management courses, although given how this season has gone, that’s probably not all that surprising.
9. San Jose State – I hand it to them for scheduling USC and Utah in the non conference. Unfortunately, everyone else is “handing it to them” too … the latest example being a 62-7 loss to Nevada.
8. Missouri – Losing at home to a Robert Griffin-less Baylor shouldn’t even be an option.

Cheer up Mizzou fans, at least you don't look like this!
7. The Memphis athletic department – Okay, these guys suck, and I get that. But if you’re Memphis, who the hell do you think you’re going to hire that would necessitate a midseason firing of your head coach (Tommy West)? Nobody, that’s who.
6. Western Kentucky – Ridiculous expectations, much? The Hilltoppers canned their head coach in their first season of bowl eligibility at the FBS level. This team is awful, true, but it’s supposed to be awful. A midseason firing wasn’t warranted.
5. The Sun Belt Conference – When over half the members of your conference have two wins or less at this point of the season, that means your conference reeks of poo.
4. Penn State – Coming into their 24-7 smackdown against Ohio State, the Nittany Lions’ best win had been over a 6-4 Northwestern team. That’s nothing to sneeze at, mind you, but it’s definitely not the resume’ of an elite team, either.
3. Colorado State – A promising start has given way to seven consecutive losses. How bad is it? This team is currently looking up at 0-9 New Mexico in the conference standings.
2. Notre Dame as a BCS contender – Navy shattered that illusion pretty quickly, now didn’t they?
1. Iowa – It would be tempting to label this team a fraud … so I’m going to do it. Iowa’s near-misses against sub-par opponents were becoming a nearly weekly habit, so it was probably only a matter of time until they got burned for them. This is what America was hoping for, anyway. Northwestern obliged us all (save Iowa fans), because the Wildcats are patriotic like that.
And for good measure, here is my Top 25:
1. Alabama
2. Florida
3. Texas
4. TCU
5. Cincinnati
6. Boise State
7. Georgia Tech
8. Houston
9. Miami
10. Pittsburgh
11. Iowa
12. Utah
13. LSU
14. Oregon
15. Southern Cal
16. Ohio State
17. Arizona
18. Oklahoma State
19. Wisconsin
20. Penn State
21. Virginia Tech
22. Auburn
23. Texas Tech
24. Stanford
25. Clemson

**My daughter is being brainwashed lately about the Jayhawk - art projects, songs, etc - we have to remind her she is not a KU fan. NOOOOOOO WAY. Therefore I prefer the Kansas team that hasn’t tried to recruit a 6 year old as a fan.

mae says:payter: i won’t be watching. i haven’t watched a michigan game in weeks. until bill martin and rich rod are no longer involved with the school/program, i won’t watch. i said it before rich rod was hired, he was wrong for the job. i said it when he was hired, and i’ve continued to say it while he has dismantled a once great football program and reduced it to nothing, but a joke for sports talk hosts and writers. i can only hope madame president ousts bill martin soon, because as long as rich rod’s sugar daddy is in A2, he will too. it’s too painful to watch, it breaks my heart. instead, i’ll be watching iowa/osu. :(
November 11th, 2009 at 2:22 PM
mae says:also, i think i should get some credit for continually standing by my word that iowa was/is over-rated/ranked. :)
November 11th, 2009 at 2:23 PM
payter says:sorry Mae. Iowa/OSU should be a good game anyway? right? go Iowa??? no, how about a tie? sigh, go Iowa.
So I will take your disgruntledness (huh?) as a cheer for the Badgahs. alright! ;)
November 11th, 2009 at 2:24 PM
payter says:agreed Mae. I knew it was a fluke. It is Iowa. Duh.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:26 PM
mae says:i will neither confirm nor deny my cheer for the badgahs. ;)
i like to think of it as tough love. sometimes you have to put baby in the corner to make her realize it’s for her own good. i’m fully aware that if rich rod and bill martin are giving the ax, it’ll take another couple years to get BACK to michigan football and it’s going to be difficult for michigan to get top recruits, but i am willing to risk it. i didn’t shed tears for Bo when he died for nothin’.
oh, and i can only hope iowa/osu ends in 0-0
November 11th, 2009 at 2:34 PM
ramy says:i agree, i had a bad feeling when r-rod was hired, but one of my best friends reassured me that this was actually a great hire, and once he recruits his team and gets his offense set up, we’d be unstoppable… granted it’s only his second year, and i pray that some kind of miracle happens next year and i’m proved wrong, but i still wish les miles would have taken the job, i was stoked about that prospect and still confused as to why with his history, he was so adamantly not interested in even discussing the job…
anyway, i always find it interesting to go back and look at what we were thinking at the time of the coaching search:

btw, bill cowher! that would have been awesome :)

ramy says:and your iowa banter is almost as grating as watching fox news… and almost as pointless to engage.
November 11th, 2009 at 4:13 PM
mae says:why? because i’m right? because nearly everyone in the sporting world agrees with me? look, i get that you’re proud of your school and you don’t want to hear people talking negatively about your alma mater (which i never have spoken negatively, i merely said they were overrated), but there comes a point in time where that pride becomes a delusion.
November 11th, 2009 at 5:59 PM
ramy says:i’m sure pro lifers and anti gay activists say the same thing…
convince yourself that you’re right because “everybody” around you says so…
i stand by my arguments.
iowa was leading 10-0 in that northwestern game when stanzi was taken out. they failed to gain 87 yards in the next 3 quarters with a true freshman backup quarterback who had played 3 downs prior to that.
iowa won 13 games in a row, several against very good teams.
they had the 6th toughest schedule in I-A football this season, beat the most ranked teams, they played some bad teams close, but so have a lot of the top 10 teams.
Florida barely beat unranked tennessee, scraped together a 3 point victory over unranked arkansas, and followed that with a narrow victory over a 4-5 mississippi state.
and most importantly, and my gauge of what makes a good team (and always has been) is how well they perform in the clutch. when a team used to winning finds themselves down to the wire, are they able to keep their composure and perform when it counts. iowa demonstrated that plentifully.
and i wouldn’t call it luck. it’s not like they won on a crazy hail mary pass on those close games. they orchestrated very disciplined 80-90 yard drives into the endzone during the last several minutes of a few games to clinch a victory.
that’s just good football.
not taking that into consideration is ignorant.
mae, in all of our “conversations”, while i put out well thought out arguments in the hopes of having an intelligent conversation on the subject, in the hopes of leaving it at, “well i see your point, but we will have to agree to disagree”, instead you fail to bring up new arguments, or to address any of mine, hence it’s really like talking to republicans or fox news pundits.
sadly, we will not see what iowa’s true potential could have been as we have lost our starting quarterback and 2 starting running backs to injuries until the bowl game.
i am sure we will have our asses handed to us this weekend against ohio state, but the healthy team we had which was winning football games was among the top 5 teams in the country in my opinion, and was repeatedly “underrated” as demonstrated by the discrepancy between their AP and coaches rankings and the final BCS standings… and i’m afraid we will have to agree to disagree on it.
also, my hair is a bird, your argument is invalid.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:42 PM
Mae says:RAMY, NORTHWESTERN’S QUARTERBACK WAS THEIR SECOND STRINGER. STOP USING THE ARGUMENT THAT STANZI GOT INJURED. ONE MAN DOESN’T MAKE A TEAM, UNLESS YOUR NAME IS KOBE BRYANT OR LEBRON JAMES. A TEAM OF IOWA’S SUPPOSED CALIBER SHOULDN’T HAVE LOST. PERIOD. AND BEAT A BUNCH OF VERY GOOD TEAMS? WHO? PENN STATE AND… AND…. AND… YEAH, NO ONE OF ANY IMPORTANCE. IF ANYONE IS ACTING LIKE A CONSERVATIVE FOX NEWS JUNKIE, IT’S YOU. FAILING TO LOOK AT THE WIDER SCOPE. FACT IS, IOWA HAS BEEN PLAYING AND BEATING A WEAK BIG 10 CONFERENCE. AND BARELY BEATING THEM AT THAT! PERI-FUCKING-OD. at least, me, as a die hard michigan fan can admit that my team sucks. and that my unfriend, is the difference between you and i.
Oh, and don’t ever, EVER, even hint at likening me to a conservative fox news lackey and make slight remarks that i would fit in with the pro choice or anti-gay marriage droids, because we will have epic problems then. epic.

November 11th, 2009 at 11:04 PM
Mae says:in reference to your post mentioning les miles; he was set to take the job, he just wanted it to go unannounced until AFTER the season/bowl game was over and stupid fathead bill martin couldn’t keep his yapper shut and that pissed off les miles so he basically told michigan “look, i can’t be in a relationship with someone who gossips and can’t keep secrets.” so he broke up with michigan before the first date. (reason #237.82 why i hate bill martin) i actually liked jeff tedford and paul johnson ahead of rich rod. i never liked the idea of having rich rod in michigan. something about him didn’t settle right with me and you can ask imani, i’m pretty good when it comes to reading people. rich rod is of poor character (tmimo) and he’s a terrible play caller. he needs to learn to adapt to the team he’s playing. look, if a team runs the same play repeatedly with positive results, maybe it’s time to stray away from the play book. (and he should have put shoelace robinson in sooner rather than later against iowa, tmimo)
and furthermore, west virginia didn’t even “get good” (for lack of a better term) until virginia tech and miami left the big east in 2004. i could go on and on until i’m blue in the face as to why i have thought rich rod was a terrible fit since before day one… actually, i already have.
in summation, rich rod is the ultimate wonder suck (which is like the worst level of suck in the history of everything) and i would like to throw a boot at his head.
i’m going to bed, good night squeeps.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Mae says:Gene, I applaud your tenacity. You’re going to try to get a reaction if it kills you.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:33 AM
ramy says:mae, seriously, i really love you as a person (i don’t even know you that well), but you are an idiot.
really… i’m not that big into this whole shenanigans. but screaming in my ear? i had to cringe just to read what you were saying… you know who yells really loud when they have no point to make? republicans. yeah, i said it… seriously…
fuck, i agree, a team is made of the composition of all it’s members, but you can’t expect a team to play as well with it’s 3rd stringers as it would with it’s first. that’s simple math. and yes a team should have a strong secondary, but that doesn’t have any effect whatsoever on the caliber of the starting team as it was…. if tim tebow was out for the whole season, i’m sorry, they would not be undefeated right now… they would have a winning record, but they wouldn’t be undefeated… a good leader, a strong offense, is going to be key as much as a good defense… when those players start going to the wayside, the team will suffer.. that’s not to say they can’t win games, but they obviously won’t be as good as they would with their starters…
i submit oklahoma as a case in point. that was a top five team at the beginning of the year. they got plagued by injury upon injury over the course of the season, mostly because they had such a tough non-conference schedule, and now they are suffering, not because they are a shitty team, but because they are not nearly playing at their potential with their 2nd and 3rd string players… come on… you can’t really be arguing that iowa should be able to continue undefeated with 2nd and 3rd string key offensive players????!?
if you are, then i don’t know what to say.
all caps really does nothing to state your case… i was hoping to have a serious intellectual debate with you about how to evaluate a team’s caliber among opponents they never played… hopefully to end in the conclusion that you can never really tell or hypothesize about how one opponent would do against another opponent, even if they played each other earlier in the season, or whether one conference is stronger than another, but that what is necessary is a playoff system that makes sure all the best teams play each other, and then there can be no debate about who would have beaten whom…
who cares about iowa, what about tcu, what about boise state… why don’t we match everybody up and see who really would win if iowa played florida, or if texas played cincinatti… seriously… this team beat this team which beat that team, so that team would probably win against this team… it’s pointless and stupid.
i watched every iowa game. i know how i think they would fare against these other teams, but i’m not going to have a stupid argument about who could hypothetically have won one game or another against each other. i would prefer to see them play each other and then not even have to discuss.
the current system encourages teams to play below their level, against horrible non-conference teams which is exactly what florida and texas have done… other teams like usc and oklahoma although i hate them both, played tough non-conference games and are now paying the price…
the bottom line is that iowa played one of the toughest schedules in the ncaa, nobody argues that. they are 9-1 in that schedule, and now without most of their key starting players..
how many posts did you see during the ncaa basketball tournament talking about ooh, if north carolina would have played kansas, they probably would have lost… none. because everybody played each other, and kansas lost to a shitty team, and north carolina dominated, and so we have a winner at the end of the season and we’re all happy.
this argument sucks, and you suck!

November 12th, 2009 at 7:27 AM
Nate says:I take it your omission of the Nebraska offense is due to the fact that they suck so bad they have rendered themselves irrelevant. This topic usually brings on great conversation but saying the Nebraska offense brings anything worthwhile to the table is like making the case that Paris Hilton is anymore useful than a trailer hitch on a moped.
If one finds themself (as I often do) trying to decide which is worse, the Nebraska offense or AIDS it’s kinda pointless. Who cares if you got chocolate in my peanut butter or peanut butter in my chocolate, either way it’s friggin delicious and the Nebraska offense still sucks my balls. It doesn’t matter if it is better or worse than AIDS (I think it’s a push btw) it is either really shitty or really crappy and what the hell is the difference!
So, to sum it up, if reeses penut butter cups are delish then the Nebraska offense sucks my balls and clearly doesn’t deserve to be on any discussion board, period.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:10 AM
mae says:*sigh* ramy, why do you keep over looking the fact that northwestern had their 2nd string quarterback running their team the whole game? and this, my friend/unfriend/defriend/friend is why a play off system much like in college basketball is needed for college football. you’re acting like a palinite who doesn’t want to hear the truth.
i cannot talk to someone who repeatedly makes excuses and refuses to look at all facts, much like certain apologists that now go unnamed on TS! we can agree to disagree (even though i’m right.)
and nate, you are correct. reeses peanut butter cups are delish and nebraska’s offense sucks.

November 12th, 2009 at 12:35 PM
mae says:True story. Well, I don’t know if that would be the case if he played for the Lions. Then again, Barry Sanders made things happen with a terrible O-Line too.
November 12th, 2009 at 1:38 PM
Tom says:I don’t know why everyone is up in arms about Iowa. They are a one hit wonder in a bad big ten conference. I’m sorry but this needs to be said once again because certain Iowa fans can’t get it through their head. They got lucky in East Lansing and that was a clean hit. Try watching the replays again!!!! Go 5 and 5 Spartans!!!!!
November 12th, 2009 at 1:42 PM
NFL Guy says:Gene,
FSU wasn’t ignored: “I’ve seen better defense out of Florida State! (Hey-o!)”
Nate sorta hits the nail on the head … I try to focus on the biggest stories in college football and the really intensely bad. Sometimes things like Nebraska’s offense being vomit-inducing are kind of taken for granted.
On Iowa, I tend to think they were exposed a bit, but obviously not having their QB played a major role in their first loss. I just think that if you put that team in the SEC or Pac 10 they’d have two losses by now, but that’s just my opinion, based on what I’ve seen from them this year. I fully expect Ohio State to clobber them this weekend, and that’s not a knock as much as it’s realistic, methinks. As per the injuries … if Iowa had been completely healthy last week, sure they would have had a better chance and probably would have won. But they weren’t, and they didn’t. You judge a team on its body of work, and should Iowa lose this weekend (as I expect them to), you judge them as a Big 10 team with two losses (and sliding in the month of November). If they win, they’re a one-loss conference champion, a BCS participant, and deservedly so.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:07 PM
ramy says:wow, nfl guy, thanks!
somehow, i feel like you’re at least addressing the issues.
the sad truth, however, is that we can’t know how iowa would have fared in an SEC or Pac 10 schedule. We can’t know how weak the big 10 is. we can’t know how Iowa would have fared if they had their best RB and QB in the game. it’s unfortunate the team didn’t have a solid set of backups, like most other teams.
but the sad thing is, college football has turned into a discussion of hypotheticals and what ifs, because sadly, nobody good plays anybody else good (with the exception of 2 or 3 conference championships)… and we’re left at the end of the season to guess what might have been and feeling unresolved. i still remember nate and one of my good friends in 1998 having endless debates and near fist fights about who would have won if michigan and nebraska would have played each other for the ‘97 championship. those arguments are impossible to have because we don’t know.
i’m not someone to blindly defend my alma mater, both michigan and iowa have been over rated many seasons, and i’ve started off many seasons saying just that.
but the bottom line is iowa had a great run. they played the 6th toughest schedule in the league and were undefeated. florida played nearly as many close games as iowa. it was a combination of a number of factors likely to never happen again, but i’m happy with the way this season started.
unfortunately without their starters, they are not a good team, great defense, but nonexistent offense. they will probably lose the next two games, and go to a reasonable bowl game, and probably win that when their starters return.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:13 PM
mae says:ramy, you need to recognize that i never once maliciously attacked iowa by saying “they suck” or the like. i never once maliciously attacked you either. it was you who ever so childishly said i sucked and called me an idiot. it’s like you’re putting your fingers in your ears and saying “la la la i can’t heaaarrrr you!” because i’m pretty sure i’ve been saying that and what nfl guy said the past few weeks. FFS!

ramy says:mae, we’re playing right into the bcs’ hands…
arguing about things that don’t matter.
at the end of the day iowa lost a game and key players and their season is over.
i took issue not with your viewpoints, but with your taunting “iowa = overrated clap clap clap clap”, “bitch please” *makes go away hand gesture and rolls eyes*, and worst of all rooting for ohio state to beat them… why not hope for iowa to beat your sworn arch enemy and prove you wrong.
i don’t believe any teams in the current top ten have really done anything to “prove” themselves as being worthy of their position. no one has played and defeated more than one team ranked in the BCS top 25, every team has played at least one or more close games against unranked opponents.
we don’t really know which conference is the strongest, we can make claims all we want, or see who won the most bowl games, but that is all guessing based on one game who would beat other teams in other games…
iowa has been unanimously ranked as having one of the toughest SOS of any team this season, a point which oddly has gone unanswered.
whether you or i were right about how good that iowa team was with all its starters will never be answered.
whether you or i are right about how good any of the teams in the top 10 are, will never be answered.
what will happen, is florida or alabama will play one good team from another conference in the championship game. whether they would have beat any other contenders, we’ll never know.
how they would have fared in a different conference, playing other teams, we’ll never know.
the fact that none of these teams have answered Boise State’s challenge to travel and play any top 10 team on their home field anytime in the next 5 years as their nonconference game, is very telling.
no one wants to play tough teams. you can make it to the bcs championship playing 1-AA teams for nonconference games, save your players for big games, and have people like you wave their banner saying they “would have” beaten anyone else if they played them because they put up big numbers against high school teams.
kudos to teams i hate, like ohio state, usc, oklahoma and iowa for scheduling tough nonconference games, against ranked opponents and getting beat up and losing good players in the process.
we don’t have to agree about the caliber of this iowa team. we CAN however, agree that we can’t know how good that team was or how good any team is, until we have a different system to evaluate them.
one that involves them all playing each other. there are only 12 games in the season. they should all count for something and demonstrate their ability as a contender, or prove their place in the rankings. as it stands, there are usually only 2 or 3. that’s a waste of 3/4 of the season.
the reason we both sound like immature children when we have these discussions is because we are arguing in a paradigm that doesn’t allow for reasonable discourse on the subject matter. we have to attempt to extrapolate conclusions about worthiness based on insufficient data. period.
let’s leave it at that, shall we?
November 12th, 2009 at 8:53 PM
stopthemadness says:hey hey HEY.
i’ve been a good girl. i deserve some damn cheesecake in two weeks. if cait withholds baked goods, then i suffer and that is something up with which i shall not put. ergo, therefore, and consequently, if there’s no cheesecake in two weeks, well then, NFL Guy, IF THAT’S YOUR REAL NAME, i will hold you personally responsible! i will sneak into your room while you sleep and i will put your hand in warm water, and then when you pee the bed i will laugh and call you incontinent.

(i’m loving the mae/ramy slapfight. two of my favorite people. two of the most stubborn people. i think this controversy should be settled with a good old fashioned duel. pistols at dawn!)
