Give Us Some Advice
And brush your teeth after every meal
What is the best bit of wisdom or advice you’ve been given, read or heard?
Maybe you were an Ann Landers fan, or had a rockin’ sage grandma. Maybe something in a comic book struck a chord, or maybe it was a line from a movie, or a Shakespeare quote misattributed to Jesus that changed your life–we don’t care if it was first spoken by Confucious or a three year old, if it’s earth shatteringly profound, or if it’s just saved you from having horrible gas in public, bring it on. Spill share…you could change a life, or possibly save someone from constipation

audioaddiction says:” There is no use in worrying about the past, there is no way to change what is done.”
My dad always tells me this when I’m stressed about an assignment or exam. It always makes me feel better, cause it’s true, worrying about it won’t change any answers I put down so worrying about it is a waste of time.

payter says:“There are other fish in the sea” and “Date around”- My mom
I am pretty sure my mom said these statements in hopes that I would save myself for marriage and find a Lutheran “fishy” (instead of all those Catholics I was dating, lol). Instead I think her advice taught me there IS a lot of fun in sleeping, er I mean, dating around.

jamie says:“Always go with your first instinct” and my personal favorite “Pull your head out” - My mom
She was an awesome business woman and always knew what to say when I needed some advice. Those were her standards.
Of course, instead of flipping you off she would tell you to “Pick a finger”
sigh…I miss her.
Working in retail, I always say “the customer isn’t always right, and sometimes they’re just stupid.”

TheHobo says:“This above all, to thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day that thoust cannot then be false to any man.” — Polonius in Hamlet.
That really is a great speech full of great advice.

Cher Horowitz says:Um. Hamlet didn’t say that. That Polonius guy did.
(This is the part where Paul Rudd falls for you, TheHobo).

oneofthevoicesinmyhead says:It’s kind of a tie.
‘A wise man learns from the mistakes of others so he can make fewer of his own.’
‘Don’t worry too much about what people think of you, worry about what you think of yourself.’
‘If you love and respect yourself, others will do the same.’
‘Lead, don’t follow.’
All from my dad. I miss him.

Dr. Gunslider says:All sins are a form of stealing:
If you lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth.
If you kill, you steal someone’s life.
If you cheat, you steal someone’s right to fairness.
(The Kite Runner)
Love isn’t always what you say, sometimes, it’s what you don’t say. My Dad
“The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it’s yours. But to win it requires total dedication and a total break with the world of your past, with the doctrine that man is sacrificial animal who exists for the pleasure of others. Fight for the value of your person. Fight for the virtue of your pride. Fight for the essence, which is man, for his sovereign rational mind. Fight with the radiant certainty and the absolute rectitude of knowing that yours is the morality of life and yours is the battle for any achievement, any value, any grandeur, any goodness, any joy that has ever existed on this earth.”
- Ayn Rand

I always liked the Dilbert cartoon that said:
“This will be your new motto: Dance like it hurts, love like you need money, work when people are watching.”
October 21st, 2009 at 6:55 AM
baby fish mouth says:I love that you like that quote SeaKat. It’s on my FB, and I think I ganked it from TheHobo before that.
I’m also a brand new Dilbert fan as of this second.

TheHobo says:I stole the Maya Angelou one from Oprah.
However, it has made certain other people call me judgmental. Which I decided I’m okay with since basically they are saying I am someone who makes (and acts on) judgment calls.
Yep. That’s me. :-P

SeaKat says:These are all really good. Kudos, folks!
Hobo - I stole it from Oprah, too! Well, Oprah talking to Maya Angelou about what great advice that is. But still, Oprah was the one who said it.
One of my other favorites that came from that same show was said by MA when Oprah was expressing regret about some decision she had made that turned out poorly. MA said to her: “You made the best decision that you could based on the information that you had at that time. You can’t expect to do more than that.” I’ve used that SO many times with friends, family, and myself - with jobs that turned out to be a mistake, partners that turned out to be mistakes, etc. Sometimes we use hindsight to beat ourselves up - when really, all we can do is make the best decisions possible with the information that we have at hand. It’s a comforting thought, TMIMO.

TheHobo says:Yeah. I like the quotes that remind me that regrets sort of waste time.

Jujubees says:I got the best sort of advice from a super drunk girl at a party. She stood up on a table and screamed, “You people are all stupid”. And then she promptly fell off that table. And no, I was not that girl. But she was right. They were stupid people but sometimes it takes an outsider to see what you don’t. And drunk girls are funny.
