Video Thunderdome!

80s Edition

ts-thunderdomeI love the music of the 1980s. I spent my teenage years watching MTV and listening to the radio. We didn’t have iPods, we had Sony Walkmans. There was no Internet. The early cell phones didn’t fit in your pocket. They looked more like something you would call in an air strike on from some old war movie.

I remember the first time I thought to myself “I must be getting old.” I was flipping around late night TV and I came across a commercial for an 80s music compilation. It had finally happened. The music I grew up on, made out to my first girlfriend to and skated to at our town’s roller rink had become oldies music.

I’ve been watching a lot of my old favorite music videos online lately and it got me thinking. I can’t be the only one who still loves 80s music. So breakout that Members Only jacket and grab your Leg Warmers and Reebok High-tops. Get that Side Ponytail in place and put on your 17 Swatch Watches– it’s time to visit the 1980s one more time, if only for a little while.

So to start us off, it’s going to be the Buggles with Video Killed the Radio Star verses We Don’t Need Another Hero by Tina Turner. It wouldn’t be right to start off and not included the song that launched MTV or a song about our beloved Thunderdome.

So who do you think deserves to move on? Cast your vote and come back next Friday for another battle. I have some match-ups in mind but I’m open to suggestions.

Who do you needs to enter the video Thunderdome?

Which video should advance to the next round of "Video Thunderdome!"?

You know, my first instinct was “Video Killed the Radio Star” but really, Thunderdome totally represents the 80s. Song from a movie featuring clips of movie? Check. Outrageous outfit, hair and earrings? Check. 80s icons? Two, if you count pre-publicly-crazy Mel.

Plus the song itself–it’s for a movie. Sorry, a sequel to a movie, and so very self-important, trying to hard to be symbolic. The 80s was the era of the “we seriously totally need to save the world, like, for sure.” And that song really captures the sentimentality of the era that had Comic Relief and Band Aid (I think that’s what it was called).

Plus, if it comes down to it, I’d rather watch Tina and Mel over and over again. :-P

So, for the next contender: iconic fashion, iconic figures, and some unique aspect of the 80s taking itself way too seriously for a decade that brought us finger-less lace gloves and leg warmers. :-P

If she does show up to talk to Rihanna, I hope she dresses like that. I also hope she sends the dude behind her to talk to Chris Brown. Hah! I almost typed Chris Martin. Now that I think of it, he can talk to him, too.

Hahaha… I just realized what she reminds me of. ANTM. That looks like Miss J styled that shit, hard core. Even the faces she makes. She is smiling with her eyes, for real(s).

I wish I could find my Casio keyboard.

If you take away Tina’s singing and the drums, “We don’t need another hero” sounds like Talking Head’s “This must be the place.” Which is in my Top 10 favorite songs of all time forever and ever.

i blame white people for “sweet home alabama.”

not as much as i blame them for “shook me all night long.”

in fact “shook me all night long” and “angel is a centerfold” can both die in a fire.

    rumour has it says:

OMG, I was just trying to explain to one of my co-workers, who is in his early 20s what a roller rink was. It couldn’t understand the awesomeness of it. Anyways, we had one growing up called Stardust. I know, awesome name, and we used to go there for our birthday parties. Good times.

Don’t feel bad Rumour, I’ve had that same conversation with younger people.

The roller rink in my town was called the Skate Ranch. Did your roller rink have a disco ball and limbo contests to?

  21. March 7th, 2009 at 11:09 AM

    rumour has it says:

I don’t remember if we had limbo contests, but there was a disco ball and lots of coloured lights.

I hated the skating rink because of Couples Skate. Also I sucked at Wipeout. Basically I skated in a circle and rolled into the snack bar, an I did this about once every 15 minutes.

Ah yes, couples skate. Time to crank up REO Speedwagon’s Can’t Fight This Feeling.

aww I am in my early 20s and I use to go to the roller rink all the time, except we skated to cool songs…like 2 legit to 2 quit and that techno gem another night, another dream.

I’m old (erm, 30), and we used to listen to New Kids on the Block for the spotlight couples skate.

    Egads. ;)

    TheHobo says:

Couples skate, like that one slow song they played at the end of Junior High dances, was mortifying.

Unless your best friend grabbed your hand and was like “fuck it, we’re a couple now!”

I used to live in my roller skates as a kid, wear them everywhere (we had hard wood floors) and then when I would finally take them off, still have that weird gliding feeling. I want to go skating now. :-P
